Cleaning materials can be dangerous

We all know that cleaning materials can be hazardous to your health. It’s a given that chemicals made to burn all those dirty marks off your walls, floors and other miscellaneous household places will need to be strong abrasives that can, quite literally, do the job.

The problem comes in when you use cleaning materials that do not supply all the pertinent information on the packaging. Did you know, for instance, that the chemical companies that produce household cleaners are only forced to warn if they contain substances that are directly and immediately harmful? Chemicals which will burn your eyes or irritate your skin. Did you also know that they have free license to leave out information about long-term chemicals that can be harmful to your health, such as certain carcinogens. So if something in their product can give you cancer after prolonged use... they don’t need to put it on the label!

The issue here is this... always be extremely careful of what products you buy. It is better to find a smaller company that gives full disclosure of all of the chemicals and stays away from terribly cheap and harmful stuff like carcinogens.

Always be wary - if you have problems later on in life... you’ll only have yourself to blame.

Hydrodemolition – the best industrial concrete cleaning method available

Cleaning concrete can be difficult. It is very difficult to clean it off properly. Ask anyone who has tried to do it with a hammer and chisel. However, modern methods of cleaning it are far better, far quicker and far more accurate the what was available in the past.

In today’s world, industry requires anything to be done as quick and as cheaply as possible. The amount of concrete that needs to be cleaned up (or out of) industrial complexes is staggering and the old method just doesn’t work properly. It is too expensive and too labour-intensive. It takes too long and does not offer the same precision as as modern methods.

One such method is hydrodemolition. It is done by using high pressure jets of water as an abrasive to clean the concrete from various areas where it is in need of cleaning. There are times when water is scarce and then a different method is used, though very similar. It is called UHP waterjetting and is a method that takes into consideration water scarcity.

Simply put, there is no reason to go with any other method of cleaning concrete. Hydrodemolition is the best available industrial cleaning method and nothing can beat it!

The Benefits of Getting Dry Docking Done Professionally

Dry-docking can be a very tricky and expensive experience, especially if you’re determined to do it yourself. While there are online guides that give you all the information on to do it yourself it might not be worth your time or money. There are simply some benefits of getting a professional to do it that you can’t ignore.

1. Dry-docking Expertise

Dry-docking professionals are qualified and experienced workers who use the equipment on a daily basis. Sometimes this expertise needs to be used in order to get the job done as quickly and effectively as possible. They will also be on look for any problems that can arise from the dry-docking.

2. Cater for additional parts

Professionals cater for any exterior hulls, tanks and superstructures. They will make sure that your entire ship is well looked after with no part of the ship being injured at any time.

3. Wide range of equipment

If you want to dry-dock your ship you might need to rent our equipment and do it yourself. Professionals already have all of this equipment purchased. If you’re hiring a marine cleaner make sure they have UHP water blasting units
and Aquagrit units.

When it comes to something as tricky as marine cleaning and dry-docking it’s better left up to the professionals.

Hydro Demolition Explained

Hydro demolition has been around for years. If you’re working with concrete and want to clean or get rid of it then this is the way to go. We discuss exactly what hydro demolition is and some of the advantages of it.

Concrete Cutting: Concrete cutting removes or cuts from structure by using high pressure water jet. This work has become very specialized with only a few companies expertly managing to pull it off. It’s a great alternative to the normal jackhammers that can cause structural damage to the actual building. When done properly hydro demolition doesn’t cause micro or macro cracks in the structure.

Your reinforced steel will not be damaged and there is no actual loosening in the structure. When hydro demolition is done it creates a new surface bond for the new concrete to be laid out. There are several safety benefits as well. The risk of personal injury to workers is decreased as there are no vibrations and no heavy lifting is required. Dust pollution is also eliminated. Hydro-demolition is more time efficient than the alternative procedures.

Hydro-Demolition experts can also do concrete scrabbling and rebar inspection. Do the more ecofriendly way of removing concrete by using water instead of other alternatives.

Sandblasting – The hows and whys

Sandblasting is an effective method of purification on concrete surfaces. There are a number of reasons one would want to sandblast including the removal of an old concrete surface in order to make way for a better adhesive. It can be used to create a new texture into existing concrete, removing the surface of an existing concrete surface’s top layer so that a new one with better adhesive properties can be laid, or it can even be used to engrave designs into a surface. Last but by no means least, sandblasting is used to remove dirt and debris from concrete.

Before performing sandblasting, you should ensure you have the following materials:-

- Goggles
- Face mask
- Gloves
- Protective clothing
- Sandblaster
- Abrasive
- Tarp
- Tape

Steps to sandblasting

1. In order to prevent damage to surrounding objects and surfaces cover them with tarp and secure this down with tape

2. Ensure protective goggles, gloves, clothing and a breathing mask to reduce the risk of internal and external injury

3. Prepare the sandblaster - a competent firm will know how to do this and what it required

4. Place the nozzle about 8 inches from the surface you wish to sand blast

5. Finally, begin the process. Whilst sandblasting, ensure that you continue to move the nozzle from side to side. Keeping the sandblaster in one place can result in too much pressure to one area

6. Once you have finished sandblasting, ensure that dust is properly disposed of

Brick Cleaning Professionals

When looking to get bricks professionally cleaned you should consider getting a firm that know what they are doing. Furthermore, it may be a good idea to introduce your brick cleaning firm to your bricklayer before work begins as this can help with the process.

There are a number of methods used to clean bricks:-

Brush cleaning with chemicals

This is chemical-based cleaning and is the most popular method that is used when cleaning bricks. Professional brick cleaning firms will be able to tell who your bricks were made by and subsequently will be able to recommend the correct chemical cleaner for the job and the amount of time that the chemicals should be left on the bricks. This process involves brushing chemicals onto bricks and then scrubbing the chemical back off. The chemical should also be rinsed to avoid patches.

Pressurised water cleaning

Water pressure is a good method to use when time is of the essence as this method saves time and labour. This method takes a lot more skill to execute and if not done correctly can result in damage to the bricks. A good firm will know exactly how much water pressure to apply to the bricks and what preparations are required to avoid damaging the bricks.

Sandblasting

Sandblasting is another method used to clean bricks and doesn’t run the risk of chemical reactions or water stains to the bricks. If sanding blasting isn’t done correctly it can leave bricks scarred, however. Not all types of bricks can be sandblasted - this includes sanded, glazed and coated bricks.

Bathroom Blitz

The bathroom can be one of the most frustrating rooms to clean - so much scrubbing, bending, reaching, and re-scrubbing. Here’s an easier way to get the task done.

Liberally spray down the toilet, tub, sink, and shower and let them soak in cleaning solution mixed with hot water as hot water makes things easier to clean. Scrubbing is easier after the solution has soaked deep into the dirt. Remove obstacles so that you can sweep. Clean the mirror before you attack the sink as stray window cleaner particles tend to drift onto other surfaces, leaving annoying droplets. Next, clean the sink and counters with a scrubbing sponge before moving to the toilet bowl. To make your toilet shine use a scrubbing sponge.

Test the shower and tub, rubbing a tile to make sure that the dirt has been lifted. If not, take out the laundry, trash, and get the mop water ready. If you sprayed from the bottom to the top, make sure you clean this way as well and vice versa. After that, take a large cup or bucket and carefully pour clean hot water over every clean surface to wash away any leftover cleaning product.

Last but not least, mop the floor, step back, and admire your work!

Tips to Cleaning Your Home Quickly & Efficiently

Coming home to a mess from a long day at work can sour anyone’s good mood. If you would rather sit and relax -- don’t just yet! Take a few minutes to straighten up and your home environment will be a little less stressful while enjoying your favourite pastime.

First, jot down a list of rooms and under each one, write in a few of the common chores that occur in those spaces. You could include mopping, vacuuming, dusting, et cetera. If you would like, underline the chores that can be done in a jiffy while running out the door in the morning, like picking up stray clothing or taking out the rubbish.

After making your list, you may come to find that there is a whole lot of work that you don’t have time to complete. You can then decide if you would rather concentrate on just one room for today, or one or two chores that occur in multiple rooms, like sweeping or washing windows.

Lastly, it is important to focus so you don’t become sidetracked and give up altogether. Work from your list one item or room at a time, and remind yourself to feel good about crossing items off of your list!

Cleaning Blocked Drains

Did you know that legislation only requires cleaning manufacturers to state whether a product will cause immediate health effects such as skin or eye irritation? If a cleaning product contains a known carcinogenic or is a known endocrine disruptor, the cleaning companies aren’t required to tell you that. Drain cleaners are among the most dangerous and toxic chemicals on the market, known to cause toxic fumes, vomiting, skin lesions, and respiratory failure.

New products on the market include enzymes that naturally break down organic matter in drains. Earth Friendly’s Earth Enzymes doesn’t give off any fumes, and actually works to prevent clogs rather than dissolve them. As with all eco-friendly products, there is a cost offset, Earth Enzymes are around double the price of most drain cleaners and are far less commercially available, which means you can’t treat your clog in a hurry.

Alternatively you can treat clogged drains at home with items you probably already have around the house. Before trying any chemicals, try pouring a kettle of boiling water down the drain to dissolve the clog. If the boiling water doesn’t clear the clog completely, a cup of baking powder followed by a cup of vinegar should dissolve the rest.

The annoyances of chewing gum

Is chewing gum more than just an annoying habit? We have all encountered people who have not mastered the social skill of chewing gum. They smack their gums and make annoying noises while chewing their gum. We feel like telling them what they can do with their gum!

Chewing gum is made to be sticky. That is part of why it is popular. However, that stickiness also creates problems when people do not take the time to dispose of it properly. Some studies indicate that chewing gum is next to cigarettes as a litter problem. There are over 374 trillion sticks manufactured every year. All of that gum has to go somewhere.

Have you ever been walking down the street and stepped in some gum that has been spat out by someone? Another annoying habit that inconsiderate people have is sticking the gum on seats at areas of transportation including trains, airline terminals, buses, etc. Cleaning this gum up has become a major problem for transportation and city organisations. They spend millions of pounds each year in this process.

One of the main problems with chewing gum is that it is non-biodegradable. It will stick to any surface for many years unless it is treated. Fortunately here at PowerPrep, we provide a chewing gum removal service offered with our specially trained personnel.
